Mumbai: Elevated metro line to be operational by year-end

Mumbai: The tracks have been laid and the much-awaited Mumbai Metro is a step closer towards making Mumbaikars happy. After missing six deadlines, the air-conditioned elevated metro line will now be thrown open to the public by the end of this year.

The service will be available between 5:30 am and midnight and the frequency of the trains will initially be 3.5 minutes. Six lakh commuters are expected to travel every day. The fares are expected to be between Rs 6 and Rs 15 depending on the distances.

The 11.4 km-long line will cover Versova in the western suburbs to Ghatkopar  n the eastern suburbs. The same distance is generally covered in 90 minutes but will now be covered in 21 minutes.

With local trains packed like sardines, the Metro line will certainly be the much-needed relief for office-goers who were so long deprived of an east-west connectivity. And with this, the city traffic congestion will be eased a bit.
